You have $10,000 USD to spend on any of the 4 cars. Chosen for FUN and not chosen to be correct awesome choices. Just go with it!
Your goal is to make a TRACK ONLY car that is no longer street-legal (not including lawless places like Florida).
The money you have is the total you can spend on the car plus mods and maintenance (but excluding fees/taxes/insurance/gas).
Parts bought are new or something you already have to remove the subjective aspect of getting deals or making you have to browse Craigslist to answer.
Car 1: 1990 Miata (turbo) ($7000)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Car 2: 1996 BMW M3 Coupe ($8000)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Car 3: 1973 Karmann Ghia Coupe ($7000)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Car 4: 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse ($1,200)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Ok, last time some of you just went with the easy BMW choice so I gave you same choice to see if you’re still boring. It seems pretty track-ready. There’s also a MIATA! Anyway, this time I don’t actually want the Eclipse and the miata having a turbo sounds good but I don’t want to take care of the potential gremlins. So, I’m boring this time, I CHOOSE THE M3! Honestly I’ve ridden with an instructor in a similar car and we went past a 991 GT3RS like it was rolling down a hill in neutral.

That’s not one of the options silly
![]() 11/03/2020 at 11:28 |

That’s definitely the practical choice! But I don't know nearly enough about them to maintain it in a performance way. It would probably be fine relatively stock with brakes and tires though

Z4 Obvi, but I’d take the beetle. *** Whistles herbie theme

neat

Yay Beetle! That would be awesome to see thrashed around some cones.

What the heck is that doing at a bit here pay here place?
![]() 11/03/2020 at 11:34 |

As long as they are doing the maintenance themselves, yes.
But auto- crossing a BMW with 100,000 miles will eat up that remaining $1200 in a hurry.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 11:34 |

Autocross the Beetle and daily the Plymouth Laser and still come out under budget.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 11:37 |

I don’t autocross can I just have the $$$? Kthxbai
![]() 11/03/2020 at 11:38 |

Didn’t even think of that lol Oppo is the best. I have never heard of a Plymouth Laser to be honest but it looked cool and I new it was weird and cheap. Was hoping someone on here randomly loved them as is tradition.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 11:41 |

Laser, and it’s not even close.

You can have the money, but it sits untouched in a bank account with .01% APR until you use it to buy a car within the parameters of the game. :p
![]() 11/03/2020 at 11:45 |
|
I’d buy the cheapest one and pay the rest of the money to someone to drive me around in my new purchase.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 11:47 |

Haha yes! The money left over could make that thing an Autox monster.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 11:48 |

Works for me! Congrats on your.... Plymouth Laser.

Who knows, man...
![]() 11/03/2020 at 11:50 |

I already have a great autox monster with the AZ-1, but I’ve always loved the Plymouth Laser.

If this is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

The laser is a dsm, same thing as a talon or eclipse, it just died after the first gen while the other two continued.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 11:56 |

My cousin had one for her first car. It was black and came with a stick-on “turbo boost” novelty toggle switch on the dash. So appropriate.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 11:57 |
|
Very appropriate. Were these basically the same as the Eagle Talon and Mitsubishi Eclipse of the time?
![]() 11/03/2020 at 11:59 |

Man I really think this is the first time I’ve seen one. Or at least I’ve never seen one and noticed the brand because it looks like all the other early 90s sporty coupes haha But Autozam..... drool....
![]() 11/03/2020 at 11:59 |

I think? Not so sure about the Eclipse.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 12:00 |

Oh oops, I just asked that of Chariotoflove. Guess I was right though, cool! I like it even more now but I guess I kinda put 2 of the same car there but 2 generations apart.

Looks like Khalbali confirmed this to be true. Cool!

Z4, done.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 12:03 |

I’m ruling out #3 and #4 based on personal experience. So bad. So so bad...
#1 is out because of 2Fast 2Furious. It’s the worst film of the serious that I so dearly love. Oof
That leaves me with the Bimmer. Which I probably would have chosen anyway.

T hat generation of Plymouth Laser, Eagle Talon, and Mitsubishi Eclipse were all the same car made as part of a Chrysler/Mitsubishi deal . Chrysler used to sell quite a number of rebadged Mitsubishi models, but it came to an end as Mitsubishi ramped up its efforts to sell directly in the US market.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 12:07 |

Yeah I remember my 3G Eclipse was the same as the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus of the time. Fun to get cheaper parts sometimes.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 12:09 |
|
Haha understood about 1 and 4, but even if 3 is bad you have $7.5k to make it better! I feel like that would be enough for a car that old and one that shared so many parts with the Talon and Eclipse that we’ve been mentioning in other posts.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 12:10 |

The easy way out haha
![]() 11/03/2020 at 12:19 |

Also the best way
![]() 11/03/2020 at 12:21 |

The answer, as always, is Miata. I’d go with an NA or NB and prep it for STS or ES (our local ES group is big and competitive). I’d spend the extra on a little tire trailer. As a bonus, you can make an STS legal Miata a fun and possibly competitive T6 car for the track. Consumables are cheap and while you won’t be fast, you’ll have plenty of fun.
Alternatively, you can get a salvage titled FRS and prep it for SSC for right around $10k. Much faster than the Miata and only a little more expensive to buy and run, plus it’s a spec class.

1st and 2nd gen are pretty similar afaik but 3r d and 4 th gen were eclipse only and pretty different, upgrade engine is a v6 instead of the turbo4.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 12:28 |

I am ESPECIALLY triggered by the DSM. NOPE. No chance in hell. Never again.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 12:29 |

Yea the 3rd gen is Car #1 up there and the engines and interior were the same in the Stratus coupe and Sebring. The 4G has no sister cars that I know of and is super different and ALMOST good again.

BOOOOOOOOO read the prompt haha don’t worry a Miata is coming later as an option but that was too easy for this V1 game.

Haha understood

1 daily driver and 3 parts cars to keep it running? I guess you could just drive over all the cones....

Lift one for DD duties, Lower another for autocross goodness, and keep the other 2 for spares.

1. ALL CAPS DESCRIPTION SO NO WAY
3. I don’t want to waste their time since they specifically asked me no to.
4. It’s in Berlin. Ju st because it’s funny to me that a German car is for sale in Berlin, MA, I’ll leave it for a local.
2. THE pick, and not only because it is the logical pick but because I have been coveting my neighbor’s. If Miata Is Always The Answer then I need the most Miata like vehicle.
![]() 11/03/2020 at 12:59 |

I mean it’s basically a first gen Eclipse/Eagle Talon
The laser moniker actually goes back to a plymouth version of the dodge daytona.
The autozam was my dream car for 15 years. Getting it was a great moment for me.

Your submission is.... acceptable. But still outside the rules. lol
![]() 11/03/2020 at 13:01 |

I just don’t know... Didn’t this come with a 260 or 289 V8? Why go with the 2.2?
![]() 11/03/2020 at 13:02 |

My problem with getting cars that I actually love rather than just enjoy greatly is I know I’m committed to keep them alive as long as I physically and financially can and I imagine it’s what having kids is like but WAY better
![]() 11/03/2020 at 13:04 |

I was comparing the Z to the Miata and Boxster before I ended up with my NB, so I get that answer.
I also chuckled at the Beetle being from Berlin hehehe
![]() 11/03/2020 at 13:18 |

That is the one thing I hate about my miata. I'm not buying oem springs for a 20 year old car with 170k, when adjustable coil overs are nearly the same cost. Well, that puts me in STR to get crushed by NDs
![]() 11/03/2020 at 13:54 |
|
Yeah... I’m sure many poor choices were made along the way.

The Beetle cannot autox with SCCA, it’s a swing axel and is specifically outlawed because it rolls over. The Eclipse and Laser (another DSM eclipse) won’t run well enough to be worth the hassle, plus even once you get them to work they aren’t great autox cars. They get cranky.
The DSM cars are at least twice what I’d ever consider as a reasonable deal.
The BMW will cost too much to keep running, you’re too close to $10k already and it’ll need a water pump, power steering pump, fuel rails, and a timing belt which are all difficult and expensive on those cars (BMW=bring my wallet). “Great condition” just means that the stuff that needs to be replaced is about to fail instead of already failed.
You picked a group of cars that shouldn’t be considered, so the answer was “none of the above”. The Z4 would probably make a fine daily, but I have sincere doubts that it would hold up to hard driving (one of my friends is a BMW mechanic and he’s scared me off of most BMW’s, that and the 740iL I had in college ruined the whole brand for me).

I picked a group of cars that shouldn’t be considered, on purpose. That’s where the fun comes in lol It’s not supposed to be a serious question. That being said, I specifically left out any SCCA or other governing body rules because I wanted the hypothetical to be just whatever people want to have fun with. I don’t run SOLO, so I can run any car in any configuration I want at my autocross and it’s great!
Certainly you have the valid correct take, but to a different question.
